I believe the greatest book ever given to mankind is the Holy Bible! The Bible is the Word of God! It is God’s revelation of Himself and His plans and purposes for humanity. The Holy Bible is definitely the one book that every person should have in their library! The Bible itself mentions other books that should be of interest to the faith community. For example God Himself speaks of the “book of life” (Philippians 4:3; Revelation 3:5) and the “book of remembrance” ( Malachi 3:16).
The Bible mentions other types of books that supports, strengthen or encourage faith. For example the Bible mentions a book of Topography. See Joshua 18:9. It also speaks of a book that chronicled the times, which included miracles, call the “book of Jasher.” See Joshua 10:13 and 2 Samuel 1:18. It’s important to note that even though the “book of Jasher” was not a part of inspired scripture, it was still beneficial to the faith community.
The apostle Paul, while suffering imprisonment for the Gospel and faithfulness to God, asked Timothy to bring him his books and parchments. See 2 Timothy 4:13. It’s impossible to know exactly what the nature of those books where, but they where obviously important to this man of God! The prophet Daniel himself said he received understanding by books. See Daniel 9:10.
Books can help us understand the will and purposes of God! I want to encourage you to read books that strengthen and encourage your faith. The Holy Bible is the inspired word of God and therefore is the source of faith. The Bible tells us that faith comes by hearing the word of God. See Romans 10:17.
Other books however, can also bring understanding and encouragement to the faith community. You must be wise though concerning whose books you read. There are so many different books and authors, therefore you want to be sure you are reading books that are scriptural and accurate!
